Supreme Court Judges Bribery saga: Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo also threatens Muntaka
Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo has joined the chorus of veiled threats aimed at Asawase Member of Parliament (MP) Muntaka Mubarak for blowing the whistle on a Supreme Court judge who allegedly offered bribes to sway a political election in Parliament.
According to Ms Akuffo, Muntaka’s allegation defames the whole of the Supreme Court and ought not to have been made.
“I am upset at the very thought that, that kind of accusation will be made. I don’t like accusations like that. It is like throwing a bucket of dirty water at people and you were aiming at somebody but you just threw it and it dirties everybody,” she said.
“There are 17 people you have defamed in that causal manner but you are talking about only one person so there are 16 people who have been wrongly done by,” she told Accra-based Joy FM.
Sophia Akuffo’s confrontational words adds to what is increasingly turning to be a mob attack on Hon. Mubarak after he revealed the alleged bribe attempt by a Supreme Court justice who was rooting for the election of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s nominee for Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Ocquaye.

According to Muntaka, this unnamed Justice of the apex court had called a female MP on the side of the NDC and asked her to vote for Ocquaye with the promise to provide her free fuel for four years and also pay her children’s school fees.
Muntaka has since said he and the NDC have the evidence to back the allegation and will be more than happy to provide it if the Judiciary demands it.
The Judicial Secretary, Pamela Addo, has since released a statement communicating the Chief Justice’ intent to probe the matter. However, despite the impending probe, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak has been receiving veiled threats from members of the Judiciary, with the Ghana Bar Association President, Anthony Forson, saying that the allegation was in bad taste.
A member of the GBA, Fui Tsikata, has since replied the GBA President saying his comment is prejudicial since it does not take cognizance of the fact that the MP has promised to provide the evidence to back the matter.
According to Sophia Akuffo, the allegation defames every single one of the 17 Supreme Court Justices even though Muntaka Mubarak alleged that only one judge made the bribe proposition.
