Tamale: Mentally-ill woman gives birth in forest

A mentally ill woman believed to be in her early 30s has successfully given birth to a healthy baby girl at the Aboabo forest in the Tamale metropolis.

According to an eyewitness, the woman was found in labour by a young man who was attending to natures call in the forest, which harbours many of such mentally-challenged persons.

The witness raised an alarm which drew the attention of several women nearby who quickly mobilised pieces of cloth and other clothing to cover the naked woman in labour and assisted her to deliver.

The assemblyman for the area, upon hearing the news, took the new mother to his house, where she was bathed before she was sent to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for medical care.

Confirming the incident to Bole-based Nkiligi FM, the head of Department of Medical Social Work at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Alhaji Braimah Saaka said both the child and mother are doing well and receiving treatment at the hospital.
