Tanker drivers declare indefinite strike action

The Tanker Drivers Unions, comprising the Bulk Tanker Drivers Union and National Association of Tanker Drivers have declared an indefinite sit-down strike demanding improved conditions of service.

In March this year, the national vice chairman of the tanker drivers association, Sunday Alabi disclosed that although an agreement was reached with NPA on meeting their terms and conditions, there are little challenges with some other stakeholders.

He also disclosed that, the NPA has failed to implement the salary renegotiation dialogue with their transporters since 2023 hence threatened to embark on a strike action.

After months of waiting for a positive feedback from NPA and other stakeholders, the drivers have decided to embark on an indefinite sit-down-strike until the framework is approved.

“We wrote a petition to the Presidency last week to have the framework approved but we have not heard anything yet and that is why we are embarking on the sit-down strike because the livelihood of our drivers is so bad. Just like the saying goes, ‘electricity no get leg, ebe copper wire wey dey carry am go,’ the petroleum downstream sector does not have leg, it is the tanker drivers that carry it and so we cannot be suffering and the rest will be enjoying and so long as they resist to approve the framework, we will not resume work”, Mr. Alabi said.
