Absence of Boards: Akufo-Addo is Deliberately Delaying Governance – Chief Whip alleges

election2024

The First Deputy Minority Chief Whip in Parliament, Ibrahim Ahmed, has accused the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo – led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of deliberately delaying governance and making it difficult for Members of Parliament (MPs) to function.

He said the delay in the governance of the country has come about by the President’s failure to form Boards of Directors for companies and corporations to take concrete decisions for the smooth running of government.

This, he described as not only deliberate, but also a sure way to corruption in government. “This is a sure path to corruption,” he exclaimed.

Hon. Ahmed, who also doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Banda made this allegation at a briefing session with members of the Parliamentary Press Corps in Parliament on Friday, June 4, 2021, shortly after the House had adjourned sitting for the day.

He could not comprehend why six months into the NPP’s second term, governance should be so slow. He indicated that within the period, the Council of State had been formed, government appointees had been nominated and cabinet formed.

The Charged MP stated that MPs had braced themselves up for hard work in its second meeting due to the number of bills pending before the House. Sadly however, not much has been done in the past three weeks after the resumption of Parliament from recess.

Yet Board of Directors to man co-operatives and companies to make decisive decisions are not in place, “What next are we waiting for?” he queried.

The Chief Whip could not understand why Ghana is facing “Dumsor” and yet the VRA has no Board of Directors to address this burning issue. Also, the country is facing fuel crisis, yet the situation at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is not clear, let alone the formation of its Board of Directors to take bold decision on the problem.

“There should be proper corporate governance, and government must walk the talk” he charged.

Hon. Ahmed was equally not happy with the absence of the Chairmen of Committees in Parliament for most ministries. He stated that in July, there will be a budget review in Parliament, yet committee chairmen are nil as at now. He opined that, “There is no driver in the car”.

It is his argument that the time has come for the formation of Board of Directors for corporations, companies and ministries to look for solutions to the numerous problems facing the country.
