They said no to ‘Ojorley’ because I sang in Ga – Cina Soul details break from Universal Music Group

“You know it is full Ga. There is no English word in there whatsoever. They just felt like it wasn’t relatable enough compared with the other songs I have. So they were like no, and I was like, you know what, for the first time in my life, I am going to be stubborn. Usually, I am not a stubborn artiste, but I just felt this conviction about this song. So I just did it, and it paid off.

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Cina Soul has revealed that her former record label, Universal Music Group, did not want her to release her hit song, ‘Ojorley’.

Cina Soul began her music career in 2014 after reaching the final stage of Vodafone Icons. Cina, however, through her hard work, signed onto Universal Records, one of the biggest music record labels in the world, in 2018.

But the working relationship between Cina and the label was cut short after two years of working together.
Before her exit, rumours hinted that Cina was unhappy and had problems with the label because she felt the label was limiting her craft.

Speaking on TV3 New Day with Cookie, the singer explained that Universal Music Group did not want her to release the song because the label felt ‘Ojorley’ is not relatable because it was in Ga without English, adding that she released the song despite the label’s disapproval.

She said: “You know it is full Ga. There is no English word in there whatsoever. They just felt like it wasn’t relatable enough
compared with the other songs I have. So they were like no, and I was like, you know what, for the first time in my life, I am going to be stubborn. Usually, I am not a stubborn artiste, but I just felt this conviction about this song. So I just did it, and it paid off.

“They were very happy and shocked. They came to Ghana because I won an award and went with me to take the award. They were(happy), but maybe if it didn’t do well,
they wouldn’t be happy.”

The ‘Ojorley’ hitmaker further revealed how her father has impacted her life and career. She explained that it was her dad who taught her how to sing. When she was little, he
would sing and ask her to imitate what he sang or sing along.

Cina Soul is out with a new song featuring Camidoh, ‘Waiting’, available on all music streaming platforms.
