In a strongly worded and unfiltered statement, Paramount Chief and President of the Aflao Traditional Council, Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V has condemned the persistent verbal attacks on prominent indigenes of the Volta region by some politicians, describing such attacks as unwarranted, disrespectful and provocative and a calculated attempt to breach the peace and security of the country.

Accordingly, he warned that such attacks would no longer be tolerated, cautioning those behind the attacks to desist or face the wrath of the good people of the region.

Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V’s statement comes in the wake of the recent verbal assault on Dr. Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle and daughter of the late President of the Republic, Jerry John Rawlings.

Dr. Rawlings was described as “a murderer’s daughter” and told to “shut up and sit down” by a yet to be identified colleague when she tried to seek clarity on an issue on the floor of Parliament, sparking widespread condemnation and calls for an investigation to identify the individual behind the unprovoked attacks.

“With deep indignation and utmost urgency, I condemn the targeted, deliberate, and systematic attacks on respected personalities from the Volta Region by some political actors in Ghana.

These unjustified and provocative assaults on our revered traditional leaders and statesmen are not only disrespectful but also pose a serious threat to the peace, unity, and stability of our nation,” he remarked.

Recounting the immense contribution of the people of the region to Ghana’s democratic credentials, Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V asserted that the Volta region has for decades, been a pillar of Ghana’s socio-economic and political development – “However, it has become evident that certain political figures have resorted to a pattern of vilifying, discrediting, and mocking our leaders for motives that defy logic and fairness. This is unacceptable, and we will no longer tolerate it,” he declared.

Baseless Allegations Against the Volta Regional House of Chiefs:

A particularly egregious example of these targeted attacks, according to Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V, occurred following the 2024 election victory “Thank You Durbar” organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ho.

He recalled that during this event, Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, condemned the reckless remarks made by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo against the Volta Regional House of Chiefs.

“Shortly after the 2020 elections, during a meeting at the Jubilee House, the former President falsely and irresponsibly accused the Standing Committee of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs—including myself—of facilitating the recruitment of people from Lomé, Togo, to participate in Ghana’s elections.

This outrageous and baseless claim was not only an insult to our integrity as traditional leaders but also a divisive and dangerous attempt to question the loyalty of the Volta people to Ghana. Such rhetoric fosters unnecessary ethnic tensions, breeds mistrust, and undermines the unity of our nation.

Rather than retract this false accusation, certain political commentators and propagandists amplified the insult with media attacks on Togbe Afede XIV, spewing blatant lies and disrespectful remarks against his leadership – This level of contempt toward our traditional rulers is unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue,” he remarked with indignation.

Disrespect Toward My Office and the People of Aflao:

The Aflao Paramount Chief recalled another instance of unprovoked disrespect, this time directed at him, the Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area.

“When I raised legitimate concerns regarding the delayed completion of the Aflao Community Senior High School E-Block which was intended to improve access to education for our youth,
then-President Nana Akufo-Addo responded with sarcasm and contempt, stating on Peace FM; “If he [Togbui Fiti] wants the school completed, he should go and complete it himself.”

This he noted was not just a personal insult but a calculated affront to the entire people of Aflao and the chieftaincy institution, stressing that it was utterly unacceptable for a President, who should be committed to national development, to mock a genuine concern about education rather than demonstrate leadership and responsibility.

Such conduct, Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V contends erodes public trust in governance and creates unnecessary tensions between government and traditional authorities.

Parliamentary Insults Against Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings:

Referencing what he described as the most recent and equally disgraceful act of political recklessness in Parliament, where a sitting Member, without shame or decorum, referred to Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as ‘the daughter of a murderer,” Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V asserted that the abominable statement, made under parliamentary privilege, was not only a direct attack on the legacy of the late President, Jerry John Rawlings, but also a blatant attempt to tarnish the reputation of his family and the people of the Volta Region.

He highlighted that such unguarded remarks reopen deep wounds in Ghana’s national history and deliberately seek to demean the dignity of the Volta people.

“This reckless and disrespectful behavior demonstrates a complete disregard for history, leadership, and the fundamental principles of democracy.

We cannot stand idly by while the hard-earned reputation of our leaders is recklessly tarnished for political gain,” he posited.

Demand For Immediate Action:

Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V called for the immediate ceasure to the continuous and calculated attacks on eminent personalities from the Volta Region, stressing that these actions have generated significant resentment and frustration among the people of the region, who now feel increasingly marginalized and disrespected.

He further cautioned the government and all political actors against these provocative acts, warning that, the people of the Volta region would be compelled to take appropriate measures to safeguard their dignity and honor, should these unwarranted verbal assaults, media attacks, and public humiliations persist.

Warning Against Further Provocation:

In his concluding remarks, Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V urged all political leaders and national stakeholders to reflect deeply on their actions and work toward fostering national unity, rather than fueling divisions and unnecessary conflicts, trusting that the matter will receive the urgent and serious attention it deserves.

“Let it be known to all that we will no longer tolerate the vilification of the people and leaders of the Volta Region – While we have consistently championed national peace and development, our dignity is non-negotiable. Should these politically motivated attacks continue, we will be left with no choice but to take all legitimate actions necessary to protect the honor of our people and our region,” the statement concluded.
