A Special Aide to the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Barbra Oteng Gyasi, was arrested and detained by the Parliamentary Protection Unit (PPU) of the Ghana Police Service over an alleged missing cell phone belonging to a staff of the Parliamentary Service.
The suspect, identified as Nana Kyei, was caught on a Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage picking up a Huawei P30 cellphone belonging to the Parliamentary staff from a counter at the foyer and immediately pushed it into his pocket.
He was picked up in the afternoon of Wednesday, March 18, 2020 to assist the Police in investigations. This was after an official report was filed by the victim at the Parliament Police post when the CCTV footage gave him up when he was picking up the phone.
Information available to Africanewsradio.com indicates that the phone got missing at a shop in the foyer of Parliament after the owner had inadvertently left it there.
Efforts to locate the phone proved futile because it had been switched off suddenly even though the battery indicator was nowhere near empty when it was left on the counter at the shop in the foyer.
This was brought to the attention of the Marshal – the head of the Security Department of Parliament who then called for the CCTV footage which gave him up and led to his arrest.
He was detained for close to four hours and released only after he was cautioned to go and be of good behavior.
In an interview after his release, Nana Kyei told journalists that even though he picked the phone, he did not mean to steal it. He was only keeping it safely for the owner.
