Trainee Teachers Support Mahama’s intention to Cancel Licensure Examinations

The leadership of the Ghana Trainee Teachers (GhaTT) has welcomed former president John Dramani Mahama’s decision to cancel licensure examinations in 2021, when re-elected.

According to the group, cancelling licensure examinations will consequently ease out the processes leading to teacher employment in the country.

They mentioned that, the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination instituted by the current Government through the Ministry of Education has witnessed massive failure so far; “14976 [teacher trainees have failed the process] in all -7,423 failed in the first ever licensure examination which was conducted in September 2018, and just yesterday 7,553 were recorded to have failed in the recent examination which was conducted in September, 2019”

In a press statement released today, signed by the group’s president, Mutawakil Ibn Nahsrulla , and sighted by ghananewsonline.com.gh, GhaTT raised concerns about the need for a teacher’s college certificate, if a licensure test score decides whether teachers will be employed or not?

“It is unfortunate that the Ministry of Education through National Teaching Council had to conduct another examination [licensure examination] before considering their recruitment. What then is the use of the certificate they acquired in college?”

The association also bemoaned that “regrettably, some Trained Teachers who have successfully passed the Licensure Examination were denied employment in the recent recruitment by the Ghana Education Service.”

They therefore appreciate the former president’s declaration on the cancellation of the Licensure as a huge relief to Trainee Teachers in Ghana, and “pray his office to consider restoring automatic postings of teachers when re-elected.”

Former President John Mahama yesterday during the launch of a fundraising platform for the National Democratic Congress promised to cancel teacher licensure examinations when he is re-elected in the December 2020 elections.
