Parts of Greater Accra will experience interruptions in water flow from Thursday the 22nd of April, 2021, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced.

The GWCL is claiming the interruptions are to allow them to replace damaged transmission pipeline between Kpong and Tema.

“The Management of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), wishes to inform the general public, that there will be an interruption of water supply to the eastern part of the Greater Accra Region from Thursday the 22nd to Monday the 26th of April 2021.”

“GWCL engineers will be replacing two hundred meters (200m) of a weak session of the main 42-inch transmission pipeline from Kpong to Tema, around Gbetsele junction, which is causing GWCL to lose several volumes of water daily and consequently having a serious impact on the volumes available for consumption,” a statement from the GWCL said.

However, critics have noted that this is a mere excuse to cover up the fact that the country has entered a water crisis in a double whammy after the government was forced to ration electricity for lack of funds to fire generation plants.

Ghanaians are already livid with the Akufo Addo administration for what they describe as deception after they noticed that state electricity distribution companies had sneaked in power rationing without prior notice. It took widespread outcry for the Ghana Grid Distribution Company (GRIDCo) and the Energy Minister, Mathew Opoku-Prempeh to admit that the power rationing is caused by an inherent that had no end in sight.

In the same pattern as what the GWCL is announcing, the GRIDCo had claimed the power interruptions are due to routine maintenance of some of its power stations. But it eventually turned out that the problem was deeper than mere maintenance work.

Meanwhile, the GWCL statement also advised consumers to store up water for consumption over the dry spell.

Areas to be affected include Afienya, Apollonia, Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Kakasunanka, Adjei Kojo, East Legon Trasaco.

Aso, all the communities in Tema (Community 1 to 25), Free Zones enclave, Tema Industrial Area, Dawhenya, Prampram, Spintex Road, Batsonaa, Coca Cola, Kasapreko, Manet, Lashibi, Klagon, Sakumono, and surrounding communities.

According to the statement, affected areas will be furnished with tanker water by the government for free.
