The Government’s agenda to achieve a 50:50 male-to-female enrolment ratio in education remains a challenge, as male students have historically dominated enrolment across the country, a recent study has revealed.
However, the University of Ghana (UG) has made significant progress toward gender parity, recording a 56.6% female enrolment rate for the 2024/2025 academic year. This milestone was announced during the university’s matriculation ceremony, held at the Great Hall.

Prof. Yidana revealed that out of the 11,548 students admitted to UG this academic year, a higher percentage of female students was recorded, surpassing national trends. He emphasized that this achievement reflects the university’s commitment to inclusivity and equal access to higher education.
He attributed the rise in female enrolment to targeted initiatives, including an affirmative action policy for women and special concessions for applicants from less-endowed schools, aimed at breaking barriers to higher education.
