As Ghana approaches the highly anticipated 2024 general elections, the Upsilon Pi Delta Institute (UPDI) has endorsed calls for a forensic audit of the voters register to ensure the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.

The demand for the audit comes amid rising concerns and allegations surrounding the upcoming elections, which are expected to be one of the most competitive in the nation’s history, with a record number of presidential candidates. Reports of missing election equipment from the Electoral Commission (EC), arrests involving individuals found with election materials, and over 300,000 voter transfers without proper procedures have further fueled tensions.

Particularly alarming are claims of illegal voter transfers to the Pusiga Constituency in the Upper East Region and allegations of multiple identities appearing in the voter register. Compounding these issues are complaints from various stakeholders over a perceived lack of transparency from the Electoral Commission, especially in light of recent appointments of political allies of the ruling party to senior positions within the EC.

In response to these concerns, UPDI has joined forces with civil society organizations and concerned citizens, advocating for an independent, internationally recognized audit firm to conduct a comprehensive review and cleanup of the voters register. UPDI believes this move is crucial in reducing tensions and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

“The integrity of our elections must be upheld, and a forensic audit of the voters register is an essential step in ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election that reflects the true will of the Ghanaian people,” UPDI stated.
