The United Press for Development Network (UPDN) strongly condemns the sluggish pace of work exhibited by the 13-member inter-ministerial committee, established on the 13th of October 2023, to coordinate the government’s response to victims affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Chaired by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, and comprised of key ministers including the Minister of National Security, Minister for the Interior, Defence Minister, Energy Minister, Finance Minister, Minister of Local Government, Minister of Works and Housing, Minister for Roads and Highways, Minister for Environment, Minister for Sanitation, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, and the Minister for Information, the committee’s progress has been notably insufficient.

After one month of existence, little has been observed in the lives of the thousands of victims in terms of relief items, health, education, and social support. The UPDN is disappointed that despite the magnitude of this humanitarian crisis, the state has not shown the necessary urgency.

However, amidst the government’s delay, UPDN commends private media organizations, individuals, companies, and entrepreneurs who have demonstrated massive support for the Akosombo Dam victims. Their efforts have played a crucial role in providing relief to those affected.

UPDN notes that 16th November 2023 will be exactly one month since His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, paid the victims a courtesy visit. Unfortunately, nothing significant has transpired except the talks, the politicization, and the discussions.

In light of this, UPDN urges the Right Honourable Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to expedite the formation of a Parliamentary committee to probe the 15th September 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage. It is crucial to unravel the root causes, assess the response, and ensure accountability for the benefit of the affected communities.

The UPDN remains committed to advocating for swift and effective action in addressing the challenges faced by the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.
