UTAG, TEWU others suspend strike indefinitely
The unions were also asking the government to settle the payment of the book and research allowance for 2022 and implement the agreement reached in March on the implementation of the market premium or review the Single Spine Salary Structure in 2023.
The University Teachers’ Association (UTAG) of Ghana has suspended its strike with immediate effect.
UTAG and three labour unions in October declared a strike to among others compel the government to settle their outstanding online teaching support allowance (OTSA) and non-payroll allowances.
The unions were also asking the government to settle the payment of the book and research allowance for 2022 and implement the agreement reached in March on the implementation of the market premium or review the Single Spine Salary Structure in 2023.
“An agreement has been reached and we will naturally return to work,” the president of UTAG Prof Solomon Nunoo said on Asaase Radio on Wednesday (14 December). “This is an indefinite suspension of our industrial action.”
“We expect the government to make the first payment [as agreed upon] this month which will be paid as a part of our salary,” he told his host Kwaku Nhyira-Addo.
“We believe that it is important that there is harmony on the campuses, and it is for this reason that we should be seen in the offices very soon to serve our students in the various institutions,” he added.
The UTAG president said the government has admitted it failed to engage the teacher unions before introducing the conditions of service.
“We all know the hardships been experienced in the country and the government admitted that it didn’t do well in introducing the conditions of service without first engaging us,” he said.
