The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has read meaning into the declaration of four seats vacant in Parliament which has given his party the majority in the House.

“If the report I am hearing from parliament is true, then something historic has just happened. The report I am hearing is that the speaker has declared 4 seats vacant. Of the 4 seats, 3 are from the NPP and one is from the NDC.

“So if those seats have been declared vacant, then it means in the life of one parliament, the minority has turned to the majority and the majority has turned to the minority. So for me, God is even showing a sign of what is going to happen, but we have to make it a reality on 7th December 2024.”

Speaker Alban Bagbin declared the seats of the NPP legislator for Suhum Constituency Kojo Asante, the NPP MP for Agona West Constituency Cynthia Morrison, the Independent MP for Fmena Constituency Andrew Asiamah, and the NDC MP for Amenfi Central constituency Peter Kwakye Ackah vacant after they decided to contest independently in the next election.

As a result, the NDC, which was the minority party at the beginning of the 8th Parliament, now has 136 seats, while the NPP has 135 seats, thus making the NDC the Majority Party in Parliament.

Though the NPP side has contested this, intending to boycott sittings until the Supreme Court interprets it, the Speaker says he applied the provisions of the 1992 Constitution, Parliament Act, 1965, (Act 300), the 2024 Standing Orders of Parliament, precedents, and established legal principles.
