Valuables stolen as Ursula Owusu’s office is ransacked

Unidentified intruders are reported to have broken into the office of Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the outgoing Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma West Constituency, stealing valuables and causing extensive damage to the property.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:17 PM on Monday, December 9, 2024, resulted in the theft of numerous items, including an unspecified amount of cash, a branded Nissan Hardbody vehicle, a television set, a printer, two stabilisers, mobile phones, food supplies, and three brand-new motorbikes.

The perpetrators also vandalised the office’s CCTV cameras, barbed wire, and main door during the raid.

Although the motive remains unclear, authorities have not ruled out a possible connection to the disturbances surrounding Ghana’s 2024 general elections.

Similar unrest was reported in Damongo, where agitated youth set fire to the Electoral Commission’s office in protest over delays in the declaration of results.

The Ghana Police Service, in a statement issued on the same day, confirmed the arrest of 89 individuals linked to election-related offences, including 40 suspects accused of vandalism, looting, and destruction of property.

Police assured the public of swift judicial proceedings against the suspects and reiterated their commitment to restoring order through enhanced security measures.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, who previously served as Minister of Communications and a key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lost her seat in the parliamentary elections to Rev. Kweku Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Rev. Addo secured 31,866 votes, surpassing Owusu-Ekuful’s 26,575 votes.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged the public to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law as the nation transitions towards a peaceful resolution of electoral disputes.
