There was total confusion at the 20th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) between DanceHall Music Artistes Stonebwuoy and Shatta Wale following the announcement of the winner of the Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the year category. The confusion brought the event to a total halt for well over 20 minutes.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Ghana Music Awards. Shatta Wale and over 30 members of his Shatta Movement squad stormed the stage when Stonebwouy was called on stage to receive his award as winner of the Dancehall Artiste category.
It is not clear what exactly triggered the confusion but it ended up with Stonebwouy pulling a trigger on the stage and nearly fired a warning shot had the security details not intervened.
Fans have condemned both Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy for the unpleasant scene they displayed during the event.
Some eyewitnesses told ghananewsonline.com.gh in an interview that that the High Life Song of the year and Reggae Dancehall Song of the year winner, Shatta Wale, had no bad intentions when he stormed the stage and that it appeared he only went there to congratulate “his friend” Stonebwouy for winning that award, however, his colleague artistes misinterpreted his moves and this was what caused the misunderstanding.
Meanwhile, after picking his second award for the night, Stonebwouy expressed regret at the incident. He apologized profusely to his fans and the gathering for pulling out a gun on stage.
The continued after the confusion, however, the organisers were unable to announce the winners for the “Artiste of the Year” and “Song of the Year”. They promised to make a press statement in the coming days.
