Vigilante Roadmap: We didn’t sign because other Key Stakeholders were absent – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said that, the party refused to append its signature to the Vigilante Roadmap document because certain key stakeholders required to ensure efficacy of the initiative were not present to do same.

According to the representative of the NDC on the Vigilante Roadmap committee, Alex Sebgefia, the issue of stopping vigilantism is “bigger than the NPP and NDC” hence the need to “widen the net and bring other players.

“We are not the only players. This is a National exercise, so let’s make it a National forum” he asserted his party’s stance on Rainbow radio today.

He revealed that, political parties have already technically signed agreements on curtailing vigilantism through communiques and are doing what they can to put a halt to the menace. However, the officially binding document will require other major stakeholders.

“We signed two or three communiques each time we met to that effect. So the political parties have already signed all the things you see in the code of conduct and first four items you see on the roadmap.

We have already signed it and have already started implementing this within ourselves as political parties”.

Mr Sebgefia additionally explained that, 18 out of the 22 recommendations in the Vigilante Roadmap were to be acted upon by other stakeholders who they expected to be present to append their signatures.

He pointed out that, stakeholders like the government itself, the Electoral Commission and the NCCE who have a major role to play in curtailing vigilantism in the country were not added to signatories of the document to properly implement the roadmap.

The NDC has asserted that, until these major stakeholders are made to sign the document, they will also not append their signature to the final document of the Vigilante Roadmap.
