The Volta Regional Minister Dr. Archibald Letsa has caused a stir by organising a second round of commissioning of the controversial 307 ambulances imported into the country recently.
Dr. Letsa who received 18 ambulances for his region decided to commit funds to a fanfare recommissioning, despite the fact that President Akufo Addo had already commissioned the ambulances on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, amidst widespread condemnation.
An unrepentant Dr. Letsa aimed expletives at those criticising his recommissioning, saying: “Anybody who criticises the recommissioning of the ambulances at the regional level has a problem and must be taken to the Synagogue.”
The regional minister’s move has generated serious outrage both on Ghanaian social media and among his political opponents.
The Ho Central Constituency communications office of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) issued a statement condemning the act as a sign of desperation for achieving nothing in the past three years of governance.
“We wish to express our outmost condemnation and the lack of respect for the taxpayer by Dr. Letsa in his bid to organize another ceremony at the forecourt of the Regional Co-ordinating council before the ambulances meant for Volta Region are handed over to the various constituencies,” read the statement from the Ho constituency office of the NDC.
“We see the invitation sent out by Dr. Letsa to the general public as losing touch with the reality on the ground and also very adamant to listen to the voice of reasoning despite the wide condemnation the president received in commissioning the ambulances.”
According to the NDC, this act by the president and the intention of the regional minister is a “loud testament to the fact that the Nana Addo led government have achieved very little despite the huge resource at its disposal hence making a festival out of this ambulance distribution.”
