Accra New Town D/A Basic School, nestled within the serene landscapes of the Wassa East district in the Western region, is facing a perilous threat—galamsey.

The once tranquil educational haven has been marred by the encroachment of illegal mining activities, turning its surroundings into a zone of danger.

Within a mere 8-meter radius of the school, the clandestine operations of galamseyers have taken root, posing a grave risk to the safety of both teachers and learners alike.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, teachers voiced their concerns over the proliferation of gaping pits left behind by the galamsey activities. These treacherous craters, brimming with water, serve as potential traps for unsuspecting students, particularly during break periods when the innocent laughter of children fills the air.

Yet, it is not just the educators who are gripped by apprehension; the residents of Accra New Town share in the collective unease. With each passing day, fears mount as the encroachment of illegal miners creeps ever closer to the school premises. Despite the escalating urgency of the situation, authorities have remained conspicuously silent, leaving the community to grapple with the looming threat unaided.

Voices within the community have pointed fingers at the District Chief Executive for Wassa East, Hon. Emmanuel Boakye, and the Queen Mother of Accra New Town, Naa Akweiye Kua I, accusing them of allowing the situation to spiral out of control.

As tensions rise and the safety of the school hangs precariously in the balance, urgent intervention is needed to safeguard the future of Accra New Town D/A Basic School and its cherished students.
