War Against Indiscipline returns: Drivers with fake number plates and stickers busted
Citi TV’s War Against Indiscipline is back on Ghana’s roads with scores of drivers arrested for displaying fake number plates, insurance stickers and other traffic offences.
Some of the drivers were also arrested for driving against traffic on the Legon-GIMPA bypass.
The driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser who claimed to be the driver of the Minister of Planning was also arrested and processed for court for driving against traffic on the Legon bypass.
He gave the excuse that he was rushing to pick the Minister for a meeting.
However, he was driving without an outrider as prescribed for ministers.
The exercise was halted briefly with many frustrated Ghanaians calling for its return as indiscipline on the country’s roads reached absurd levels ahead of the festive season.
The Chief Executive Officer of Citi FM and Citi TV, Samuel Attah-Mensah, had earlier indicated that the reason the exercise stalled was that the police bowed to pressure from unseen hands.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Attah-Mensah noted that the police had lost steam in recent times despite the willingness and support from Citi TV and even the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority.
“DVLA has given us a whole bus. The bus is still idle. And one of the major problems of the police is a lack of resources. What have the police done? Nothing! I am not just saying this to blame the police because there is an upper hand that is also directing them.”
“The people with the mandate to execute; everybody is looking over their shoulder because they want validation from someone else.”
But the exercise is back with several reckless drivers getting arrested for various crimes on the road.
The War Against Indiscipline was started in May 2019 and in June the station roped in police to name, shame and punish persons who break road traffic regulations.
The campaign is intended to run until May 2020.
As at July 2019, Citi TV‘s collaboration with the police to clamp down on errant drivers has accrued to the state over GH¢258,000.
The amount was realized from 499 drivers who were arrested for breaching traffic regulations on various roads in Accra.
