We will build better roads – Veep assures Asantehene

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has cut sod for work to begin on the First Phase of the Rehabilitation and Auxiliary Infrastructure of Kumasi Inner City Road and Adjacent Streets Project.

The construction works will benefit six Metropolitan and Municipal areas, including the Asokwa, Kwadaso, Oforikrom, Tafo and Suame Municipalities. Manhyia, Bantama, Nhyiaeso and Subin, all sub – metros within the Kumasi Metro would also benefit from this project.

Addressing the chiefs and people of the Region at Kentenkrono-Nsenie, near Kumasi, on Friday, 13th December, 2019 Vice President Bawumia reiterated Government’s commitment to the provision of infrastructure across the country, including the Ashanti region, saying “we are not going to build Green Book roads. These are real roads.”

“The development of the entire Ashanti region, especially Kumasi and its environs, is very dear to the heart of President Akufo-Addo and his government. Today’s ceremony shows the commitment of the Government to improving the condition of the urban road network in Kumasi and the country at large”, Dr Bawumia intimated.

MINISTER FOR ROADS:
Speaking earlier on, Minister for Roads, Akwasi Amoako Atta noted government’s commitment to upgrading all roads in the country.

This, he mentioned will open up the country for businesses to grow and save time.

Government, he disclosed will be introducing a new regulation that would see to it that maintenance aspect would be inculcated into all road contract.

According to him, it would mean that roads would be maintained by contractors till the time of its lifespan is complete.

Other road works undertaken in the region since 2017 include asphalt overlay of 70km of a planned 200km of roads within Kumasi, expected to be completed in 2020; minor upgrading and rehabilitation of 24km of roads completed within Ejisu, Juaben, Ayigya and Effiduase as well as many others.

CHIEF:
Speaking earlier at the colourful and elaborate event, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, Chief of Amakom who represented the Asantehene said the King would not tolerate any shoddy works from contractors working on the Kumasi as well as Ashanti roads.

He stressed that it was high time people especially road contractors are held responsible for their actions and inactions.

Ashanti as region, Nana Adu Mensah intimated have provided support for successivegovernments especially the NPP but have had its roads in deplorable conditions.

The 100km roads which was about to be carried out, he noted should be of high quality so that the public will have value for the money they give to government in the form of tolls and taxes.

DIGNITARIES:
Vice President Bawumia was accompanied by a number of officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff, Francis Asenso Boakye; Ashanti Region NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

Also present were a number of Ashanti region MPs including Hon Emmanuel Marfo (Oforikrom); Hon Daniel Okyem Aboagye (Bantama); Hon Kwabena Owusu-Aduomi (Ejisu); Hon Kennedy Kankam (Nhyiaeso); Hon Benito Owusu Bio (Atwima-Nwabiagya North); and Hon Eugene Boakye Antwi (Subin).
