The Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says his party will not sign any peace pact ahead of the December 7 election.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News PM Express on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, he said violence would happen in the midst of signing a peace declaration if the root causes of the violence were not addressed.

“At any stage when something is happening, I call on those who, in the future, will call us to sign a declaration to speak up and stop it from happening,” he added.

According to him, the 2020 elections was still characterised by pockets of violence despite peace declarations and involvement of the National Peace Council (NPC), hence, the need for stakeholders to address building blocks that may lead to violence.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia added that efforts should be made by institutions to be proactive in order to prevent violence instead of resorting to signing peace agreement.

“At any stage when something is happening, I call on those who, in the future, will call us to sign a declaration to speak up and stop it from happening.

“If you let these issues build up and then say, ‘Let’s play a peace football match, sign a declaration, and hope for a peaceful election,’ it won’t work. We did all this and more in 2020,” he stressed.
