The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged a robust plan to revitalise the Ghana Premier League and enhance its commercial appeal if elected in the upcoming December 7 elections.
Speaking at the launch of the NPP’s 2024 manifesto, Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision to support the league and its clubs, aiming to create jobs and strengthen the country’s sports sector.
Key to his proposal is the establishment of a Sports Employment Module, which would be funded through the National Lotteries Authority and the Gaming Commission.
This initiative would provide Premier League clubs with much-needed financial assistance for operational expenses, including player salaries.
Dr. Bawumia promised that his government will support the revival of the Premier League, and clubs, to improve commercial viability, and to create related jobs.
He further committed to addressing transportation challenges faced by clubs by providing each Premier League team with a bus.
In addition, Dr. Bawumia revealed plans to encourage greater corporate investment in sports by offering tax incentives, including a flat tax, to entice private sector involvement in the development of Ghanaian sports.
Describing the NPP’s 2024 manifesto as offering bold solutions, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that these initiatives would not only reinvigorate the Premier League but also position Ghana as a hub for sports excellence and economic growth.
