Western Togoland: I will comment soon – Rawlings

The office of former president, Jerry John Rawlings, has refuted reports claiming he had written to government on the “independence declaration” by the separatist group, Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF).

In a press statement released today, signed by the Communications Directorate at the office of the former president, Kobina Andoh Amoakwa, he noted that “former President Rawlings has neither written to Government or made any public statement on the separatist declaration”.

He urged the media and the public to disregard the earlier reports alleging that the former president has run commentary on the issue.

He added that, Rawlings will “issue a statement on the developments in due course”

Independence declaration 

On 16th November, 2019, the secessionist group, HSGF declared “Western Togoland” independent from Ghana. 

According to the leader of the group, Mr Charles Komi Kudzodzi, the intended separation was due to the neglect by the government of Ghana to the plight of persons in the region

This declaration which has been described by the government as “unlawful” and disruptive of the nations peace has led to some tension and series of arrest.

It has also sparked a nationwide argument on the veracity of the secessionist group’s claims and how to properly deal with the sensitive issue.

Some reports linked the former president Rawlings to the happenings, asserted that he raised the issued concerning the breakaway declaration to the government.

This according to the former president, is untrue as he is yet to publicly comment on the issue.
