When the Virgins got Married – An Evans Eyram Adokor play

This is a story focused on the values of a Christian family. It is about two virgins who got married off by their clergy families as the Bible demands of every responsible family. The two virgins however got into the marriage without any idea of intimacy as they had no opportunity for sex education.

‘When The Virgins Got Married’ is a theatrical performance put together by Kritik Productions at the Christ the King Hall in Accra. The performance attracted theater lovers and expectant and so despite the heavy rains on the nights of the performance the hall was still filled to capacity and the play run twice as scheduled.

The drama featured fresh and talented actors and actresses including Ama Ntiwa Panford, Mensah Adu-Gyamfi, Jemima Diane Ribeiro, Andrew Asare, Peggieta Kesse, Ruth Naa Adei Kotey and Lee Lantei Lamptey, among others.

The play touches on pre counseling sessions that couples ignore before marriage, especially when they have no idea about each other. It is a stage pulpit for the young adult in any relationship before marriage.

Kritik Productions is an edutainment company that is dedicated to producing original content for the screens and for the stage. It seeks to promote modern African traditions through the production of family oriented feature length films, TV series and stage plays to Ghanaians, Africans, and the Diaspora.

The company has been around since 2008 and it currently has in its repertoire major stage plays like Closing the GAP; Math in the bedroom; Love Net; Lovers’ Agony; Mirror on the wall; An August Visit; Women Oxymoron-Men’s mistake; and the recently produced “When the virgins got married”. All of these were written and produced by the founder and Chief Executive Officer Evans Eyram Adorkor.

In an interview with Ghananewsonline.com.gh, Eyram Adorkor stated that he picked the idea from the viewpoint of the church. He said he was trying to answer the question of how it would all play out assuming that two people joined together in Holy matrimony are complete virgins and had no privilege of sexual education before the ceremony. “How does a Christian marriage survive with all these naivetés about intimacy?” he stated.

He said many Christian marriages fall off a few months after marriage with big ceremonies despite the “for better for worse” vows because they soon realise that they cannot keep to that vow, and so they find ways and means to satisfy their emotions outside the marriage. “Christian marriages are lacking in so many intimacy tips and how to keep the marriage fresh and pure,” and that is what we sought to correct in our plays,” he stated.

Eyram Evans Adorkor is the creator, writer, and director of Dzigbeză. He is a graduate of the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI). He is a visionary and an entrepreneur who does not compromise on quality and standards of his productions.
