Who declares Coronavirus a Global Health Emergency

World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the new coronavirus a global health emergency as the outbreak continually spreads to other countries.

Speaking at a conference in Geneva, WHO chief, Dr Tedros Adhanom, noted that “the main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries

Reportedly, over 200 people have died from the virus infection with about 9,800 cases confirmed. A total of 19 countries outside mainland China and its territories have confirmed cases of coronavirus according to the New York Times.

The WHO said there had been 98 cases in 18 other countries, but no recorded deaths. Most international cases are in people who had been to Wuhan in Hubei.

However in eight cases – in Germany, Japan, Vietnam and the United States – patients were infected by people who had travelled to China.

The concern is that the coronavirus could spread to countries with weaker health systems if precautionary measures aren’t taken.

Dr Tedros described the virus as an “unprecedented outbreak” that has been met with an “unprecedented response” and reiterated WHO intention to support lower and middle-income countries to strengthen their disease surveillance.

Precautionary measures

1.Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol hand sanitizer.

2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

4. Stay home if you are sick.

5. When you cough or sneeze,

6. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

  1. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces like doorknobs, tables, chairs etc

The general public is also advised to avoid any animals ( dead or alive) brought from affected areas, particularly China and to basically stay away from any animal products such as fish, seafood or any uncooked meat.
