The Widows Association in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency of the Greater Accra Region has strongly condemned recent allegations made by John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, against Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the area and Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources.

During a public programme organized by TV3, Mr Dumelo accused Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan of being responsible for the death of her late husband.

The Widows Association described Mr Dumelo’s comments as egregious, unsubstantiated, and offensive, not only to Madam Alhassan but to all widows and women across the nation. The association stated in a statement dated  August 29, 2024  that these remarks undermine the dignity of widows, who already face significant emotional and societal challenges after losing their spouses.

The Association praised Madam  Lydia Seyram Alhassan for her strength and resilience in overcoming personal tragedy and serving as a dedicated public servant.

They highlighted her commendable leadership in Parliament, her role as Deputy Majority Chief Whip of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic, and her contributions to her constituents and the nation.

‘’As a widow, Madam Alhassan has become a symbol of empowerment, demonstrating that women can rise to positions of influence and serve their communities with integrity and commitment despite adversity’ the statement said.

The Widows Association further criticized Mr Dumelo’s comments as a broader attack on all widows in Ghana, viewing his words as a painful reminder of the stigmatization and discrimination widows often face in society.

The Association expressed disappointment that a public figure would resort to baseless accusations for political gain, disregarding the potential harm his words could cause.

“Our cultural values as Ghanaians are rooted in respect, empathy, and compassion—especially towards widows, who deserve our support and understanding,” the Association said in their statement.

“Mr. Dumelo’s statements are a betrayal of these values and a stark departure from the decency and respect that should characterize our public discourse.”

The Widows Association expressed solidarity with Madam. Lydia Seyram Alhassan and supported any legal action she may take to defend her reputation and seek justice.

They stressed the importance of protecting the dignity of all widows and emphasized that derogatory and unfounded attacks on women, particularly widows, should not be tolerated.
