WNR: NDC Chairman’s Brother Accused of Illegal Mining and Intimidation

A brother of the Western North Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Richard Aidoo, also known as Regal, has been accused of forming an illegal task force to intimidate miners while allegedly engaging in illegal mining (galamsey).

According to sources, Regal has orchestrated the seizure of over 35 excavators at Awaso and Bibiani, allegedly extorting money from miners before redeploying the equipment under his control to participate in illegal mining activities in the Nkateaso and Beposo forests.

The source further claims that Regal often boasts about being untouchable due to the backing of his brother, Richard Aidoo, popularly known as Big Aidoo. Additionally, he is accused of using his alleged illegal activities to undermine the party’s constituency leadership as he eyes a parliamentary bid.

Critics argue that Regal was absent during the 2024 elections but has now resurfaced to take advantage of the party’s victory. While he initially positioned himself as an anti-galamsey advocate, he is now accused of exploiting the situation for personal and financial gains.

Neither Regal nor Big Aidoo has publicly responded to these allegations. However, concerns are growing within the party and the mining communities over the alleged abuses of power and the impact of illegal mining on the environment.
