The Overlord of Dagbang, His Majesty, Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II has made a passionate call on Dagbang indegines living in Agbogboloshie in the Greater Accra region to embrace peace.
The Yaa-Naa made the call when the GIZ in collaboration with the Council for Dagbang Chiefs Peace Committee paid a courtesy call on him at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Wednesday, 4th December, 2019.
The Peace committee led by the Kasoa Dagbamba Naa and the members of the GIZ was at the palace to seek for the blessings, guidance, and authority of the Yaa- Naa to end the recurring violence in the Agbogboloshie scraps yard.
In his advice to the delegation, Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II called on Dagbang youth dealing in scraps at Agbogboloshie to bring a lasting solution to the recurring violence anytime there is a change of government in the country.
He believes the peace in Dagbang now should be replicated all over the world where Dagombas find themselves.
He added that there can never be development without peace hence, the need for the youth to dialogue to bring a permanent solution to the recurring conflict which is usually fought between the NDC and the NPP and also on the Dagbon chieftaincy lines.
The Yaa-Naa also called on the youth to desist from descrimination and politics of insults which has the tendency to breed conflict in the society.
He prayed for the Peace Committee and promised to put the issue before government to facilitate the efforts of the GIZ and the Council for Dagbang Chiefs in the Greater Accra region to end the violence in Agbogboloshie.
He also advised the youth to be patience in all their endeavors and also touted the efforts of a known peace broker in Dagbang popularly known as Alhaji One-one who was also part of the delegation for the critical role he played in the restoration of peace to Dagbang.
The GIZ country director for Ghana, Macus in an interaction with the media at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Wednesday 4th December, 2019 said the desire by the GIZ to establish an E-waste project at the Agbogboloshie scraps yard will be impossible without peace.
He opined that the Agbogboloshie scrapyard which is predominantly occupied by dagombas is the biggest scrapyard in the country hence the need for Dagbang traditional leaders to intervene to restore peace in the area.
In their quest to empower the Agbogboloshie scraps dealers, the GIZ has rolled out a lot of projects in the area. They have built a training center and also renovated a football park in the Agbogboloshie community.
The GIZ is also partnering with the government of Ghana to manage e-waste in the country especially in Agbogboloshie.
To support this development, the Technical and Economic Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Ghana and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany gave rise to the Environmentally Sound Disposal and Recycling of Electronic Waste (E-Waste Programme).
The Programme for Technical Cooperation is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH” in partnership with the Ghana Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI).
Its objective is to improve the conditions for sustainable management and disposal of electronic waste in Ghana.
