Yendi: Ghanaian policeman’s gun stolen while ‘sleeping’ at a check point
An AK 47 rifle was stolen from a police officer while on duty with two of his colleagues over the weekend.
It is believed that the officer Cpl Frank Mapram was asleep when unidentified persons made away with the said rifle which was loaded with about 20 rounds of ammunition.
The incident occurred just before 3:00 am on Sunday, December 5, 2020, at the Yendi-Bimbila Check Point in the Northern Region, police said.
His colleagues, L/Cpl Heloo Danies and L/Cpl Noel Kumadzi later joined in a search after an alarm was raised.
“When he woke up, he did not find the rifle after diligent search. All three duty officers detained for further interrogation”, police superiors have told DailymailGh.
DailymailGh.com also gathered that this is the second time a service rifle is reportedly missing from the Yendi Division.
Led by the Northern Regional Police Crime Officer, a team of investigators has since visited the Yendi Divisional Command to investigate the matter.
2018 Audit Report
Incidents of missing weapons have been widely reported in Northern Ghana.
The region has been recording a series of conflicts leading to loss of lives and properties.
A 2018 Audit report revealed that two AK 47 rifles went missing between May and August.
Two on-duty officers in the region were questioned over the matter. It still remains unclear whether the officers had accounted for the missing weapons.
“In our view, should the rifles and cartridges fall into wrong hands, they could be used to engage in social vices”, the Auditor General said in its report.
