2021 Ghana Journalist of the Year, Francisca Enchill on her part bemoaned the inability of government to tackle corruption in the country, especially in the education sector.

Speaking during an X Space organized by the Youth Against Corruption Ghana on the theme “unravelling the corruption-education nexus” she urged the Minister for Education and legislator for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu to put in measures to solve the canker.

“Relevant stakeholders in the education sector are taking advantage of the gaps to enrich themselves at the [neglect] of school children. Most of them are aware of what they are doing. Teachers are printing handouts and selling them to students at an overpriced amount. That is corruption”, she stated.

The female investigative journalist emphasised that strict measures are needed to deal with such acts in schools in order to make heads of schools act responsibly.

“Educational state institutions must pay surprise visits to schools without headteachers and teachers being in the know because they hide and cover the rot to make everything seem perfect when it’s not. We must also get to the point where any GES Director who fails to deliver is kicked out instead of being transferred to another place. This will make them sit up in discharging their duties with integrity and more [responsibility]”, the investigative journalist pointed out.

Board Member of the African Advisory Board against Corruption, Edem Senanu has called for heightened vigilance from the youth to report suspicious individuals or institutions alleged to be engaged in any act of corruption.

On his part, the anti-corruption crusader called on parents, teachers and children to report any stakeholder involved in the canker.

“Young people, teachers and parents must be bold to report and partner with anti-corruption in fighting corrupt practices. It shouldn’t just be if you see something, say something, it’s about time we do something about what we see,” he mentioned.

The Youth Against Corruption Ghana is an initiative under the Office of the Special Prosecutor, OSP, which seeks to inspire Ghanaian youth to play their roles as anti-corruption champions today, and not tomorrow, recognizing that corruption steals their future.
