Akwamu Hene and Acting President of Techiman Traditional Council in the Bono East Regional capital, Nana Owusu Gyare II, is calling on all Stakeholders and well–meaning Ghanaians to push for a referendum during the 2024 general elections to make some major amendments in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
According to the Techiman Akwamu Hene, the tenure of the Office of Presidents, Powers of the Executive or President and some other clauses especially the payment of ex-gratia to Article 71 Office holders is hugely draining the nation’s coffers and the major reason why People or Political parties will do everything humanly possible to the extent of shedding blood in order to enter Parliament or come into Government; a system that usually disturbs the Peace of our Country during electioneering and therefore need to be changed immediately.
Nana Owusu Gyare made this disclosure in an exclusive interview with Asta FM’s Nana Kwadwo Adu when the Presbyterian Church of Ghana organized a “Symposium on Peace Campaign” in Techiman ahead of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
“There are a lot of things in the constitution that a lot of people want it to change, President John Mahama, Ex-President has added his voice to it and I know President Akufo-Addo agrees that the constitution needs to be amended.”
“So all that I’m advocating for, is that all stakeholders will come together and ensure that this year, the NCCE will educate the populace on the need for referendum so that during the 2024 elections, there will be a referendum on the amendment constitution”. Nana revealed.
Nana Owusu Gyare II, further made a passionate appeal to Nananom, Civil Society Organizations, Religious Groups, NCCE and all Stakeholders to take up this campaign seriously and press upon the Government to make this referendum happen in 2024 to save cost and our dying democracy because our current Constitution cannot take our nation anywhere.
