Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President, has been told that five months is enough time to solve the problems he seeks to tackle after being elected.
According to the front runner of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, Bawumia should not wait to become President before addressing the many challenges bedeviling the nation.
He says despite Ghana currently having “the highest food inflation, almost the highest in Africa” where “prices are unbearable”, the Vice President, together with the entire administration, does not appreciate the enormity of this catastrophe.
That, he says, is the biggest hurdle the nation has to cross at the moment, indicating that Dr. Bawumia wouldn’t have asked for Ghanaians’ vote before addressing the challenges which he has the mandate to resolve now.
On a working visit to two constituencies in the Greater Accra Region Thursday, July 18, 2024, John Mahama noted that the NPP’s oblivion of the challenges of the people is the biggest problem the nation is facing at the moment since a problem is half solved once it is identified.
John Mahama was speaking on the recent unemployment statistics in the country when he made the comments.
“But the dangerous thing is, when you’re ill and you know what is wrong with you, it is halfway towards a cure.
“If you’re ill and you know it’s malaria, you’re halfway towards curing yourself of malaria. If you’re ill and you know it’s typhoid, you are diagnosed, you know it’s typhoid, you’re halfway towards getting the cure. Unfortunately, the people who have caused this economic crisis do not even realize there’s a crisis.
“Because when you hear them say they are the best government and that even Nkrumah doesn’t come, it shows that they don’t even understand the situation in which Ghana is. Because if they understood the situation, we’re still five months to an election. There are urgent measures that they can take to ameliorate the situation. You don’t go saying, ‘vote for me and when I come, I will do this’. You can do it now.”
He told the Vice President to rationalise the taxes he said he would if he gets power.
“You say you’ll rationalize taxes. Five months to an election, you can rationalize. It’s enough time to rationalize taxes. All the promises you are making, you have enough time to start implementing them right now,” he charged.
