Thirty-nine of the over forty suspects arrested during the Democracy Hub protest have been remanded into prison and police custody by a circuit court in Accra.
They were arraigned in batches in court on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, following their arrest on Sunday and Monday during the three-day protest.
In an update, the police said the court remanded 28 of them into Police custody and the remaining 11 into Prison custody.
While 30 of the accused persons are to reappear before the court on October 8, 2024, nine others are to appear before the court on October 11, 2024.
“The remaining suspects will be put before the court to face justice. The case is being prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney-General,” Assistant Police Commissioner Grace Ansah-Akrofi announced in a press statement.
The accused were arrested during their protest against illegal mining from September 21 to September 23. On the second day, the police arrested 42 of the protesters including some leaders.
According to a statement by the police, the demonstrators unlawfully assembled at the 37 Intersection and attacked Police officers performing their lawful duties.
It said they entered a Police vehicle, removed the ignition key and threw it away, pushing down Police crash barriers, “obstructing traffic, causing unlawful damage, and disturbing the peace among others”.
Meanwhile, the pressure group is accusing the Ghana Police Service of violating the fundamental human rights of detained protesters.
In a press statement on Tuesday, September 24, the group said the “detained” protestors were transported from across all cells they were held to the Police Headquarters at Osu in the morning and were being denied access to their lawyers.
