4.8k Christians; 1.8k Moslems jailed in Ghana in 2018 – Prisons report

A total of 9,034 persons were jailed in Ghana in 2018 and out of the figure 4,813 representing 53.28 per cent were Christians while 1,809 practised Islam, the Prisons Service’s 2018 Annual Report reveals.

The report also disclosed that majority of those convicted are persons who have completed basic school, numbering 5,888.

According to the report, of the over 9000 who were convicted in the year under review, 1,427 had attained secondary or post-basic education with the rest representing the basic school leavers.

It added that 4,579 of the convicts were aged between 18 and 25 years, while 2,731 were aged between 26 and 35 years; representing 81 per cent of total convicts.

On the admission of foreigners, the report said 445 Africans were in Ghana’s prisons with Nigeria recording the highest figure of 156.
