"89 suspects have so far been arrested in connection with various offences; 40 of these suspects are directly connected to acts of vandalism, looting, and destruction of property. The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has disclosed that 89 individuals have been arrested across the country for various election-related offences in the last two days.

According to the police, 40 of the 89 suspects have been linked to the destruction and looting of state properties, and they will be held accountable.

“89 suspects have so far been arrested in connection with various offences; 40 of these suspects are directly connected to acts of vandalism, looting, and destruction of property. All these suspects are in custody and will be taken through the due process of the law,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi at a press briefing on Monday, December 9.

She cautioned the public and individuals intending to cause further destruction to desist, saying, “We would like to use this opportunity to caution persons to desist from such acts of violence, as the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to face justice.”

She also stated that the police have implemented some security measures to curb further chaos and are prepared to deploy additional mechanisms to put a stop to the post-election disturbances.

The police’s statement followed an invasion of the national head office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) at Kanda in Accra, as well as the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly in Accra, by some unidentified thugs believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The thugs removed pictures of the President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo, looted state-owned laptops, and also damaged some office equipment.

Ghana’s 2020 election has so far witnessed the death of three persons while several others have sustained injuries.
