The President of Greater Accra Markets Association, Mercy Naa Afowa, has said that lack of security at the various markets is a contributory factor to fire outbreaks.
Speaking on the Yen Sempa morning show on Onua FM on Monday, December 21, Madam Afowa told host Nana Okyere Awurukuo that the markets have few to no security officers.

She cited how a large market such as the Makola market is manned by only two security officers at night.
According to her, the situation leaves them vulnerable when there are disasters and even theft.
“Our businesses suffer,” she said in Twi.
Madam Afowa noted that despite their contributions to the local assemblies, they still lack adequate security to protect their investment.
She lamented how some of the market women lose their investments become indebted for life after these disasters.
She, therefore, advised the local assemblies to beef up security to forestall future fire outbreaks.
