An Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Oscar Kofi Amevenku has dragged the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General before the High Court, Accra, over the alleged failure of the Ghana Police Service and the IGP to promote him to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police(DCOP) without just cause or reason.
ACP Amevenku who joined the Ghana Police Service in 1989 and was promoted to his current rank in 2017, wants the High Court to order the Ghana Police Service and the IGP to promote him to his deserving rank ( Deputy Commissioner of Police) effective January 1, thereby restoring his seniority in the service 2022; to pay him all emoluments commensurate with his rank, grant general damages and cost( including legal cost)
In a writ of summons sighted by MyNewsGh.com, the plaintiff finds it unfair and unjust that his juniors have now been unfairly promoted over and above him when he has diligently discharged his duties and is deserving of the promotion.
“Plaintiff avers that throughout his career in the service, he has strived to embody the principles of competence and integrity as evidenced by his commendable service record which includes awards and nominations such as his selection for the African Union Mission in Somalia, a distinction shared by only three Assistant Commissioners within the service,” the writ of summons filed on July 30, 2024 explained.
The Ghana Police Service has been hit with several lawsuits by high-ranking police officers over discrimination or denial of promotions without just cause. ACP Amevenku’s suit is one of several known to the public.
