The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has once again made what some may consider a rather dramatic statement in Parliament, insisting that no amount of intimidation or political persecution will deter the opposition from reclaiming power in 2028.
Speaking after the debate on the 2025 Budget Statement on Tuesday, March 25, Afenyo-Markin accused the Mahama-led government of using state institutions to harass political opponents, claiming that such tactics would not break their spirit.
“You can arrest all of us, but we will remain resolute. No amount of intimidation will break our spirit. In 2028, we will defeat you and restore true governance to this country,” he declared with a bold tone.
The Minority Leader went further to criticize what he described as the ruling party’s misuse of the justice system to suppress opposition voices, arguing that governance should be about national development, not political witch-hunting.
“A government that prioritises persecution over progress is bound to fail. Ghanaians are watching, and they will decide in 2028,” he warned.
Afenyo-Markin also called on his fellow opposition members to stand firm and not be shaken by what he termed “politically motivated arrests.”
His remarks, however, have sparked mixed reactions, with some questioning whether such statements are necessary at this stage in the political cycle. While his supporters see him as a fearless leader standing up for democracy, critics argue that his comments are more theatrical than substantive.
What do you think? Is Afenyo-Markin making a valid point, or is this just another exaggerated political outburst?
