The African Union’s Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Mohamed Belhocine, has sounded a warning: “Africa’s development hinges on strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across all educational levels”.
Speaking during a courtesy call on Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Prof. Belhocine emphasized that TVET development is crucial for the continent’s growth, particularly in the face of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and digital tools.
Ghana Leads the Way
Ghana has taken proactive steps to prioritize TVET.
Dr. Adutwum revealed that the government has made TVET a top priority, with countries like China offering significant support.
Under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, existing TVET schools are being revamped, and new ones built.
Africa Skills Week
Prof. Belhocine’s visit coincided with the maiden edition of Africa Skills Week in Accra.
He praised the event’s timeliness, noting its alignment with the African Union’s theme for the year.
The event aims to establish robust TVET education content on the continent.
