PPP kicks against moves to rename UDS after Rawlings

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has charged President Nana Akufo-Addo to avoid renaming the University of Development Studies (UDS) after the late Ex-President Jerry John Rawlings.

According to the party, the late president had rejected this offer earlier. Therefore, President Akufo-Addo should respect the late president’s decision.

In a statement released by the PPP, they wrote that “In as much as President Akufo-Addo may have the best intention in this agenda, it is absolutely significant to note that it be inappropriate for Mr. Akufo-Addo to disregard the wishes of Ex-President Rawlings in this attempt to rename UDS.”

On Saturday, the President suggested to the UDS council to consider naming the school after late President Jerry John Rawlings, who died on Thursday.

The PPP rather opined that the government should encourage the setting up of museums and libraries for Ex-Presidents of Ghana. They said that the ex-presidents would be required to help raise funds to the construction of museums and libraries which will serve as historical and tourist attractions. They added that the facilities would also help in research and educational activities.

They recommended parliament to begin discussions about the Presidential Records Act to mandate Presidents to hand over all archives to the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board for preservation and maintenance when they leave office.
