The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has lauded the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of a key suspect in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
The suspect, identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
The court subsequently remanded him into police custody to reappear on April 1, 2025.
In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Kofi Yeboah, the GJA described the development as a significant milestone in the long-standing quest for justice for the late journalist, who was gunned down on January 16, 2019.
The association commended the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for what it termed as a “giant step” in efforts to unravel the murder of the journalist.
“For more than six years since the assassination of Ahmed Suale, this is the first time the Police have made a significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” the statement noted.
The GJA acknowledged that the arrest follows persistent calls by the association for action on the case, which has contributed to Ghana’s declining ratings on the World Press Freedom Index in recent years.
While expressing satisfaction with the latest development, the GJA urged the Police not to relent in their efforts to apprehend all other persons connected to the crime.
“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale,” the statement added.
The association reiterated its commitment to following the case closely and warned that it would proceed to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice if concrete results are not achieved by the end of March 2025.
The GJA also indicated plans to meet with police leadership for updates on the case and other unresolved assaults on journalists, including the case of Joy FM’s Latif Iddrisu, which is also being considered for submission to the ECOWAS Court.
Meanwhile, the GJA has informed its international partners — the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) — about the arrest and ongoing prosecution.
Both bodies have pledged their support and expressed readiness to escalate the case to other international forums in the quest for justice for Ahmed Suale.
Ahmed Suale was a member of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI team.
He was assassinated in Madina, Accra, after his identity was exposed following a documentary that exposed corruption in Ghana football.
