President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for major reforms to the United Nations Security Council, urging a more just and balanced approach to global governance. He made these remarks on Tuesday night during the UN Summit on the Future of the World.
Akufo-Addo criticized the current structure of the Security Council, stating that it fails to reflect modern global realities. “In its current form, the [Security] Council does not reflect the realities of today’s world. It remains an outdated post-Second World War relic, with Africa, a continent of 1.4 billion people, grossly underrepresented,” he said.
The president stressed that true multilateralism cannot exist within an unjust and unequal global system. He called for comprehensive changes to ensure that all nations, regardless of size or wealth, are equally represented. “We cannot speak of multilateralism when the structures of global governance are rooted in an unjust and unequal order. Mr. President, the time for half-measures is over. Bold reforms are needed to ensure that every nation, large or small, rich or poor, has an equal voice at the table,” Akufo-Addo declared.
President Akufo-Addo is set to deliver his final address to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, September 25, where he is expected to discuss key issues such as climate change and other pressing global challenges.
