Alan Kyerematen Critiques Slow Transition of PFJ to Commercial Farming, Proposes AgricPacs Project

Kyerematen’s AgricPacs proposal seeks to enhance food production by making it easier for farmers to access sizable tracts of land. This is a crucial step towards scaling up agricultural activities and ensuring food security across Ghana.

Alan Kyerematen, founder of the Movement for Change, has voiced concerns over the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) policy, highlighting its slow transition from smallholder farming to commercial agriculture as a hindrance to achieving food security objectives.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Citi Breakfast, Kyerematen emphasized the necessity of commercial farming to reduce food costs and ensure sustainable food security effectively. He underscored that while small-scale agriculture plays a role, only some countries have solely relied on it to achieve significant food security outcomes.

Kyerematen acknowledged the initial focus on smallholder farming but stressed the need for a faster shift towards commercial farming within the PFJ framework. He expressed disappointment that the policy’s full potential had not yet been realized due to this slow transition.

To address these challenges, Kyerematen revealed plans to launch the AgricPacs project. This initiative aims to collaborate with traditional leaders to streamline land acquisition processes, facilitating large-scale agricultural production. He outlined that AgricPacs would leverage government incentives to encourage widespread participation in agriculture.
