Amphitheatres are about 70 percent done – Mark Okraku Mantey

“The Amphi theatres are about 70 percent done,” he told host, Johnnie Hughes.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey has said the five amphitheatres promised by the government to be built across the country are currently under 70 percent completion.

The Deputy Minister said this during the Creative Arts forum organized by 3Entertainmnent on Friday, August 30.

“The Amphi theatres are about 70 percent done,” he told host, Johnnie Hughes.

The construction of the amphitheatres was part of President Akufo-Addo’s 2020 manifesto for the creative arts sector.

In April last year, a sod-cutting ceremony was held for the construction of the first amphitheatre project at the premises of the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Kumasi.

Government said similar projects will be mounted in Tamale, Accra and Takoradi and will have maximum capacity of 1,000 people.

The construction of the five amphitheatres was first announced in October 2022 by the former Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr Mohammed Awal.

Addressing the media on October 19, 2022, he said “This year [2022], we will do 5 amphitheatres, then we do another 5 next year [2023]. So by 2024, we would have all 16 regions to give our artistes venues to perform.”

Unfortunately, two years after none of the amphitheatres have been completed. However, there have also been calls for the government to renovate the National Theatre into an ultra-modern status.
