APD 2024: We’ll make mobile money interoperability across Africa a reality, says Akufo-Addo

The theme of the three-day APD conference was “Delivering Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value and Trade”.

President Akufo-Addo has pledged to ensure that he rallies his colleague presidents to make interoperability readily available across Africa.

Mobile money interoperability enables traders and customers to make transfers between mobile money accounts held by different mobile money providers.

Interoperability reduces the cost of initiating transactions across networks, as customers no longer need the services of a third-party payment provider to initiate transfers across networks.

Speaking at the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) 2024 on Saturday (27 January), President Akufo-Addo said it should be possible to make interoperability a reality across Africa with the right political will.

“Just like I did last year, I intend, with the support of my colleagues, to present the Peduase Compact to the 37th Ordinary Assembly of Heads of State in Addis Ababa in three weeks’ time,” he said.

The next AU Summit runs from 17-18 February.

“There are items in this compact which I believe can be quickly implemented if we are able to mobilise the needed political will, such as achieving interoperability across Africa.

“I promise with the support of my colleagues to do what we can to make interoperability a reality within member states,” Akufo-Addo said.
