Asankragua: Small-Scale Miners Burn Galamsey Equipment on River Tano

In addition to burning the dredging machines, other items, such as water pumps, motors, and tanks, were confiscated as evidence.

A task force from the National Association of Small-Scale Miners conducted a major anti-galamsey operation along the River Tano in the Asankragua area of the Amenfi West District on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. The raid targeted illegal mining activities (galamsey) that have been plaguing the region and damaging water bodies.

During the operation, the task force seized several pieces of equipment used by the illegal miners. Upon spotting the task force, the miners fled, abandoning their machinery on the river. With no arrests made, the task force decided to destroy the left-behind equipment, including dredging machines, by setting them ablaze.

In addition to burning the dredging machines, other items, such as water pumps, motors, and tanks, were confiscated as evidence.

Mr. Original Sankwan, the secretary and spokesperson for the Asankragua Small-Scale Miners Association, emphasized the association’s commitment to intensifying efforts to clamp down on galamsey operations, particularly those harming river bodies. He reiterated that the association will not tolerate illegal mining activities that cause environmental devastation.

The association reaffirmed its dedication to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and vowed to continue its fight against illegal mining to safeguard the environment for future generations.
