Assent to anti-gay bill now – Advocates for Christ Ghana to Akufo-Addo

As Ghana awaits the President’s decision, A4CG has appealed to civil society organizations, churches, and families to educate the public on the bill’s importance, urging them to resist misinformation.

Advocates for Christ Ghana (A4CG), a leading Christian Group, and its allies have called on President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo to assent to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2021, (the anti-LGBTQ+) which was passed by Parliament recently.

The group urged the President to stand with Parliament, stand with the Ghanaian people, stand by his Christian faith, and assent to the bill.

A4CG lauded the passage of the Bill, describing it as a significant victory for ‘humanity’ and a safeguard for Ghana’s socio-cultural norms and values.

The bill, which has been a subject of intense debate over the past three years, aims to solidify the country’s stance on issues related to gender, marriage, and procreation, countering the LGBTQI+ philosophy and practices.

Parliament, in a landmark decision on February 28, 2024, passed what has been dubbed the anti-gay bill eliciting a wave of reactions across the nation and beyond.

Advocates for Christ Ghana, in a statement, emphasized the bill’s alignment with the faith, beliefs, and teachings of the vast majority of Ghanaians, noting that over 71% of the population identifies as Christian.

“We note with gratitude the significant milestone achieved in Ghana’s Parliament…This is a victory for humanity as the LGBTQI+ philosophy and practice threatens the very existence of humans in the near distant future,” A4CG stated.

The group extended its congratulations to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Deputy Speakers, and other parliament members for their roles in ensuring the bill’s passage.

Special commendation was given to the eight members of parliament who championed the bill, including Hon. Sam Nartey George and Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, among others, for their “courage and resilience” against opposition.

The passage of the Bill has not been without controversy, drawing criticism from human rights organizations and international bodies concerned about the potential implications for LGBTQI+ rights in Ghana.

As Ghana awaits the President’s decision, A4CG has appealed to civil society organizations, churches, and families to educate the public on the bill’s importance, urging them to resist misinformation.

The group’s message is clear: “May God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong, bold to defend forever the cause of freedom and right.”
