The Ashanti Region Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Andrew Augustus Nana Akwasi, has cautioned party supporters to avoid persons who will play tribal cards to aid future aspiration.
He said the NDC has become more attractive because it is rooted in the masses and does not discriminate, unlike the ruling party.
“We have a history, a history of love and tolerance. We do not discriminate and it won’t start under my administration,” he told Media General‘s William Evans-Nkum.
It is alleged that some individuals eyeing executive positions in the party in the Ashanti Region have started playing the tribal card.
To corroborate the claim, a staunch member of the party Yakubu Tony Aidoo is seen in a video being circulated on NDC electronic platforms lambasting the tribal bigotry.
“Frank Osei Mensah, our first Ashanti regional chairman came and performed well, we all supported him to succeed; Dr Samuel Sarpong has been visible in all party activities, his son even contested for the Youth Organiser position.”
In the said video, Yakubu further vented his anger on the NDC Ashanti Caucus.
“I am disappointed in the NDC Ashanti caucus, how many of you have been supporting the party even though. You have enjoyed all the big positions. How many of you even support the party financially. We sacrifice our lives for the party; they beat us and destroy our properties but we do not talk about it,” he retorted.
He singled out the current chairman, Andrew Augustus Nana Kwasi, as a selfless individual who has dedicated his resources to ensure the party stands on it feet whiles in opposition.
He also praised the embattled former CEO of Cocobod Dr. Stephen Opuni for supporting the party in the face of persecution.
“We will face off with any elder who tries to undermine the party through tribalism,” Yakubu Tony Aidoo fumed.
In the heat of the development, the regional chairman has called for calm.
“I am imploring the rank and file to remain calm, and avoid tribal bigots who might have been hired by the ruling party to undermine our victory in 2024.”
He called for massive support for former President John Mahama to bring the party back to power.
“This is the time to work together and rally behind former President Mahama, victory beckons and nothing will come our way,” he said.
