Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has appealed for an end to the instability that has plagued the northern town of Bawku, as a means to address the ongoing conflict.
During a visit to the Bawku Naaba, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the destructive impact of the conflict on the community and urged the Mamprusis and Kusasis factions to cease violence and seek peaceful resolution through the constitutional process.
Addressing Bawku NaaBa Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and his elders on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, the Vice President underscored the importance of adhering to the established guidelines outlined in the Ghanaian Constitution for resolving chieftaincy disputes.
He emphasized that violence and bloodshed would not bring about a resolution and reiterated that no government can impose or use force for settling such conflicts.
Expressing concern over the situation, Dr. Bawumia urged the Mamprusis and Kusasis to prioritize peace and harmony, highlighting their shared history, intermarriage, and linguistic similarities.
He emphasized that sustainable development could only be achieved in an environment of peace and urged the youth to focus their efforts on fighting for development rather than fighting against each other.
Furthermore, the Vice President acknowledged the urgent need for development in the community, particularly in terms of job creation, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
He assured the people of Bawku that as President, he would prioritize these areas to uplift the community from poverty and underdevelopment.
In response to Dr. Bawumia’s visit, Bawku NaaBa Asigri Abugrago Azoka II expressed gratitude, describing the Vice President’s relationship with him as akin to that of a father and son.
The Bawku NaaBa commended Dr. Bawumia for maintaining a close and cordial relationship and for his commitment to the welfare of the people.
He also recognized the positive traits of humility, respect, calmness, unity, and commitment that Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated throughout his political career.
During their discussions, the Bawku NaaBa expressed deep concern regarding the devastating effects of the conflict on the community.
He appealed to the Vice President to use his influence and leadership position to bring about lasting peace in Bawku, supporting Dr. Bawumia’s vision for a peaceful nation and a peaceful Kusaug Traditional Area.
Dr. Bawumia thanked the Bawku NaaBa for his kind words and reiterated his commitment to peace both in Bawku and throughout Ghana.
He emphasized his determination to work towards resolving the conflict and fostering an environment conducive to sustainable development.
Accompanied by a delegation that included the Interior Minister, the Chieftaincy, Religion, and Culture Minister, the National Chairman of the NPP, and several MPs from the northern region, Dr. Bawumia’s visit to Bawku signifies the government’s efforts to address the conflict and promote peace in the region.
